Nitrocellulose is a highly inflammable compound formed by nitrating cellulose through exposure to nitric acid or any other powerful nitrating agent. Nitrocellulose is a mixture of nitric esters of cellulose, and a highly inflammable compound (originally known as guncotton) making it a main ingredient in modern gunpowder and used as a propellant or low-order. It is also found in explosive also used in certain lacquers and paints. Partially nitrated cellulose used to be found in plastic film, inks and wood coatings.
