Pigments are used as a coloring agent in paints, ink, plastic, fabrics, cosmetics, food and other materials. Most pigments are used in manufacturing materials. The visual arts are dry colorants ground into a fine powder. This powder is added to a binder (or vehicle), a relatively neutral or colorless material that suspends the pigment and gives the paint its adhesion. Identification and distinction are usually made into a pigment and dye by the fact that the pigment is insoluble in its vehicle (resulting in a suspension) at the bottom, and a dye, which either is itself a liquid or soluble in its vehicle (resulting in a pure solution).
